A 50 000-count true-RMS handheld meter and two practice boards (switch between A and B under the board). Turn the dial, plug the red lead into the right jack, then click test points to place the probes. The meter models what real ones do: 10 MΩ input impedance, shunt burden voltage, lead resistance, fuses and accuracy specs. Break it and you'll know why.
Voltage: in parallel, red lead in V Ω. Current: in series. Break the circuit (here: remove J1) and put the meter in the gap, red lead in mA µA or A. Resistance, continuity, diode: power off first. Never put a meter on a current range across a voltage source: that's a short circuit and the fuse is the only thing protecting you.
Click a jack to move the red lead.
